Sweet, I guess I'll get to find out what a Battles show is all about.
So, the band is Ian, John Stanier and...who?

Crap, I just found out that the Battles/Icarus Line show in Lawrence is an early show, starts at 5. That hurts my chances of being able to make it significantly (as well as just generally sucking), but I'll try.

I suspect The Icarus Line is worth seeing. They have one song on the Underworld soundtrack, and they opened for A Perfect Circle this spring. This 2004 review from Pitchfork makes them sound like they're worth checking out: pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/i/icarus-line/penance-soiree.shtmlwhat does the icarus line sound like? are they worth sticking around for?

An early EP I had of the Icarus Line reminded me a bit of Black Flag with a bit more screamed vocals, but I think they sound a bit different nowadays. Their live shows are always meant to be good though, with lots of energy and worth seeing (sometimes instruments will get trashed).
To those that have seen Battles live, how do their gigs compare with their recorded output so far? I finally managed to pick up EP C over here in England in a second hand store though I haven't seen it anywhere else since, but I have to admit I was slightly underwhelmed. I had put off hearing any snippets of Battles til they released something fully, so I suppose I was expecting something a bit more urgent sounding. It it starting to grow on me, so I will hold out for the full album, but what did others think?

It gets better with each listen. I think the B EP is going to be the best one because it is the more fast paced stuff. As far as comparing it to lseeing them live. There really isn't a good comparison. I saw them before I heard any of the full material and my jaw was on the floor the whole time. I would definately recommend seeing them live because I think you can appreciate the music a little more knowing how they make it. But all I can say is just keep listening it gets better and better. Try listening with headphones too. I did the same thing with the new Tortoise and that's one of my favorite albums now.

okay, I hope I don't get flamed for expressing my opinion of the c ep and please don't think I'm totally negative like a certain someone who used to frequent this site (*cough* chad *chough*) but I was definitely underwhelmed by this cd. It's not like it's bad by any means but there are a few things which I think could've been improved upon... My first complaint would be the drumming, I'm just not fond of the stuttering style and also the drums are played in slow simple rhythms, I think the music would've been much more interesting if the drumming had been more complex and faster. Also the compositions themselves weren't complex, while the parts were good they were mostly repeated for the entire length of the songs, with some slight changes. All in all I think it was a pretty good debut though and this band definitely has potential, I can't wait to hear the b ep.

The drumming bothered me at first too, but then I thought that Ian Williams was probably pretty sick of doing really complicated stuff and probably didn't want another Damon on his hands so he decided to go for a more straight forward approach. I got used to the drumming. Also this is a totally different thing than Don Caballero. I think it gets better with each listen, but that's just me.

Deathofpop: I disagree with respect to the drums -- I like John's drumming. But I do agree that the songs tend to sound a little monotonous, the same loops over and over and over with very few changes. One thing about Don Cab - as far as I'm concerned the songs were never monotonous.
That being said, I think the C Ep is much better than the great majority of the new releases I've heard this year. I imagine that it's a totally different experience to see Battles live, as a number of people have posted.
P.S. - I don't recommend listening to C when hung over, it's like someone tapping on your forehead with a pencil. Consider yourselves warned!

I'll have to look out for the B EP then when it comes out, and I am actually looking forward to full length too.
I have to confess that I too was a little disappointed with John's drumming on the C EP, but that's only because I'm comparing to his previous recorded work and seeing him live. I'm hoping the next releases have him showing a little less restraint.
And as for seeing them live, being that Don Cab never made it to the UK, I'm hoping Battles will come over at least as someone's support band.
