Had to sign up to say......that the Battles set was just about the best thing I've ever heard. Was clueless going in, other than a little Don Cab. stuff......mindblowing though.
Only thing going right now that compares to this is Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, and even that is not as electric and dynamic.

I saw Battles last night in Denton, Texas, opening up for Prefuse 73.
To be honest, Battles has become one of my favorite bands ever since hearing them over a year ago. I know some people that I know have argued and said that Battles is not as good as Don Caballero. Well I think Battles surpasses Don Caballero on so many levels. I don't think Ian Williams will ever stop progressing as a musician and will always challenge himself as well as musicians like me to try new and unique different things. And this is really an all star cast of fine musicians.
Battles then took the stage, and with no introduction or even indication that they were about to play, they bust into their first song. For about an hour, my ass was kicked in so many ways. I was impressed with the fact that they sped their songs up, being as how technical they are and what not. It was yet another reason to love these guys. And they are such amazing musicians. I wish I could be Ian Williams. I want his mad skills.
Afterwards, I went to their merch table to get a shirt. I got to talk with Ian Williams. Dave Konopka gave me a handshake because I was wearing a Yankees baseball cap ( then I totally made an ass out of myself when I told him of another baseball team I liked, but I ended up referring to a football team, since I don't have that good of knowledge of the sport ). Tyondai Braxton thought I bought these two shirts, but I told him it wasn't met. John Stanier's sweaty body bumped into me.
None of this means anything to you guys and in all respects, it seems rather immature, but it means a lot to me. If not for these individuals, I would probably hate music right now, and would probably not play anymore. Because of these guys, they give me the influence to continue on. If only I could've expressed myself to these guys on how I felt, but it's hard to talk to someone at a concert, as concerts are loud and there are a lot of people at concerts.
I am definitely going to see them as much as I can.. Hopefully they come through Oklahoma one of these days.
