Hello fellows. When I was unhappy with the state of American cartoons (c'mon... cow and chicken? totally spies?? etc etc etc), a friend of mine turned me on to FLCL by saying, "it's like Mr Bungle, only animated". So I checked it and now love it more than any other cartoon/anime, save Aeon Flux. Now I'm seeking animation on the same level of artistry as FLCL or AF. If you know of any, please let me know. So far I've checked out Cromartie High School, which is really just odd funny with none of the really artistic merits present in FLCL; but a great show nonetheless; especially the music, which is either trashy lo fi rock or queer classical stuff. Next up I'm checking out Azumanga Daioh!, which has shown promise already. Hit me back, dizzles. (or whatever) I'll post whatever new stuff that seems interesting.

Robot Chicken sucks. don't watch it.
i like FLCL a lot. i've got all the shows on DVD. i think we're on the same page.
i disagree about Cow & Chicken. it's got some great great stuff. animation-wise it's not that great, but you can't only look for that in a cartoon, now can you?
that said, in terms of animation, check out Sprited Away. that is some sweet stuff. i'll try and think of some more.

FLCL forever, seriously. The music you hear on FLCL is pretty much all done by the Pillows. Good stuff. FYI, the budget for the animation on FLCL was the same for that of a regular 26 episode TV series.
Cowboy Bebop's a great show too, and definitely check out some Miyazaki films.

Gracias mi amigos. Well, I'll try Robot Chicken. Is it on dvd yet? Cowboy Bebop sounds cool too. Hope it's better than Samurai Champloo. Miyazaki is thee shit. Saw the butchered american version of Nausicaa waaay back in the 80's and some of the images haunted me ever since... then I discovered Totoro and Spirited Away, and... damn. Him and his team rock. Howl's Moving Castle is one of the coolest animated films yet. Nausicaa is pretty sweet as well, and featuring Uma made it a 'must buy'. The only one I haven't seen is Porco Rossi. We watched Azumanga Daioh today and it is not even close to FLCL in any respect. On its own merits, it is the CUTEST anime I've ever seen, and the look of a character will change depending on their mood, which is the only comparison that can be drawn to FLCL. And that fucking little girl singing her cooking song... I laughed, I puked.

Porco Rosso is an awesome movie. Awwwwwesome.
One tip when it comes to watching Miyazaki dubbed films... don't look at the credits. Ever. Castle In the Sky is a prime example of that.
I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop. Its basically a futuristic western with a jazzy soundtrack. Samurai Champloo is done by the exact same staff that did Bebop.

Excel Saga is probably one of the zaniest things I've ever seen. Take FLCL, lose the realism of story and fine art, and crank up the gags... Excel Saga. The main character dies 3 times before the story even starts. She is resurrected each time by the Will of the Cosmos - a circular disk of 'outer space' with arms and a voice. Her first task from boss Ilpalazzo is to kill the creator of the Excel series. When she can't decide whether to slay the manga artist, her Good and Evil Angels show up to duke it out... Good suddenly whips out a pistola and caps Evil: "Bullet of Justice!" "I didn't know Good fought dirty..." Good is later arrested for the murder of Evil. And to cap it off, the ending theme is sung by a dog... with an interpreter in a little bubble off to the side. Ridiculous. Funny. Annoying. I recommend it as much as Cromartie HS. Oh yeah. Vampire Hunter D was pretty cool too. The great Castlevania anime that never was. Or could have been but wasn't and is therefore better. Or uh something. A warning: Dunno if they've corrected it in recent versions, but the dvd I saw has a problem with brightness; no matter how you fiddle with your tv, certain brief moments on screen will only show D's white face; the dark background and his black clothing will be inscrutable. One last: Cat Soup is strange and eery but worth at least renting. I think the dvd is only 15 bucks, btw. But it's only really worth seeing once or twice. Weird. Neat.

Thanks Fvgaman, I'll take a look. Read a review comparing Excel Saga to Project A-ko. Anyone seen this one? And what's this Desert Punk all about? Worth a peek?

Desert Punk Plot Summary: In the future, Japan is a wasteland. In the Great Kantou Desert, scattered humans eke out a living in the hot sand. Among them, a short-statured man they call "Sunabouzu" makes a living as a bounty hunter. Like a demon of the sand, he seems unbeatable. Yet, like all men, he has a particular weakness for the opposite sex...
I haven't seen it, but I heard its pretty good, albeit a shounen and whatnot. Anyone here seen Elfen Lied? I just finished watching it last night. Totally awesome! I think it could have been longer, but I liked how much action they put into one episode. The ending was a little dissapointing but it was still a beautiful show. Anyone know if they're planning to do anything else with that?

Shounen? So what's with the love of "tits"? Is it a cover?

Shounen are shows that are usually directed towards younger males, i.e. DBZ, Bleach, etc. I'm not sure what you're second question is but I'll give two answers 1) Elfen Lied is the epitome of mature content, but its there for a reason 2) the Japanese are perverted bastards.

Foghorn Leghorn still gets me.
I urge you to check out the "Hypochondricat" episode. Possibly the bleakest cartoon ever.
