Does anyone have tips for getting people to go to gigs? Me and a friend have been putting on monthly, free gigs for about two years in a pub in our sleepy shit-hole town. Three bands each night, all playing original music. There's literally no competition apart from cover bands in a few other pubs but even still our crowds seem to be getting smaller by the month. Posters haven't helped and social network sites seem to be paying little dividends. This week we're even giving away free beer (we get 50 each time, to split between the bands, the sound engineers and a few for ourselves because we don't get paid). Any suggestions?

having open mic helps, because usually it makes people come out. the summer sort of sucks in general for shows because people arent around as much.

Open mic wouldn't help where we are I don't think. It would attract a whole bunch of acoustic mumbling singer-songwriters and our few loyal punters would talk over them. There isn't a lot of local bands playing original stuff either so if any bands played an open mic night it would mostly be by-the-numbers blues boredom. The problem may just be population. The town and surrounding villages probably only has ten or twelve thousand people and people who want live music are likely to hop on a bus and go to Dublin.

We used our facebook page to give away free beer on Saturday night. People seem to like free beer.

I really like that. Was that you playing or did you record it? Either way, if we could get people playing like that during open mic sessions we might just go for it.

well, i played guitar, and i had an impulse tracker module going. its a pretty old song. you just gotta open up open mic and see what happens, its usually worthwhile. sometimes it can be bad, sometimes its really good. its worth it when its really good though.

When I said did you record it, I meant were you the one recording the video of someone else's performance. Anyway, if you're ever on the east coast of Ireland let me know and we'll give you a spot. I'm still not sold on the open mic idea, we generally have bands booked well in advance so there wouldn't be much time time for it anyway. I'd go to an open mic thing somewhere else though and might even get up on stage. My co-organiser would probably punch me if I suggested open mic because he likes to have heard all the acts before booking them.

Anyone check out 7 Skies H3 (Flaming Lips 24 hour song)? I'm enjoying the hell out of it but it has me wondering where they'll go from here. Hopefully they're not finished with regular albums.
