just throwing out a suggestion/query here; Glass Cymbals? glass sounds nice when it pings and resonates and you can get tempered/laminated/bulletproof varieties........ has anyone seen or heard of someone making them?

I was wondering if anyone has found any accurate drum tabs of any don cab songs? Of course I guess I could try to play them by ear but thats pretty tedious. Any suggestions?

The most recent shot of my kit I've got. I recently moved it to the other side of the room (any time I have to move it is a painful experience) and in the process, removed the smallest roto-tom in favor of raising my hi-hats, moved the 22" ride to the right-hand side, mounted a cowbell on the bass drum hoop, and condensed everything in general. Still the same Pearl Export, but the picture shows the brass piccolo I mentioned in my older post. The cowbell is an LP (Rock) Ridge Rider. The cymbals are all Zildjians. Clockwise, they are: 22" Ride (1970-something - donated by a friend), 14" A Mastersound Hi-hats, 12" A Splash, 14" Trashformer, 20" A Medium Ride, 20" K Custom Ride, 14" A Custom Fast Crash, 20" Oriental Crash of Doom. My preferred sticks at the moment are 5B Rotationally Balanced nylon-tips, but I like the sound of the Zildjian Tim Alexanders too.

Mapex Saturn pro sparkly blue; 5 piece (snare incl) Paiste 502 hats (they suck, kind of)
Only Don Cab song I actually tried to play is Palm Trees In The Feckin Bahamas. Not too difficult at all. And it's a hell of a lot of fun

And it's a hell of a lot of fun I've tried to play a few don cab song with varying degrees of success. Spent a lot of time on Repeat Defender. It's a lot of work, but you feel like a monster when it goes well. Also, has anyone had any luck with finding sticks that don't break after a few uses? I got a pair of Neil Peart japanese oak sticks. They're great to use and I figured because they are oak that they'd last a while but one of them broke after about two or three hours of use.

Well, I picked up a pair of DC10s just to see what it's like using them and I can't imagine ever wearing a pair out (though I know it happens from seeing Damon's sticks). However, I haven't been bad about breaking sticks ever since I got out of high school, and thusly marching band. Our school switched to Aheads because we were breaking so many, but those didn't last that much longer. Mostly they served to make us more determined to wear them out.

Haven't had much problem with Pro Mark or Vater sticks. However, I tend to believe that other factors like playing technique and drum placement have a larger influence on stick breakage than the sticks themselves. Same thing applies to drumheads (basically)...I can play for several hours and only make light marks on a new head, while I've seen my less drum-inclined friends make hideous scratches and/or dents in mere minutes. Then again, there are awesome drummers who go through sticks like it's nothin...I saw Tera Melos play earlier this year and their new guy broke two, maybe three sticks in one sitting.
Haven't tried to play much Don Cab, but I've occasionally busted out the intro beat to "Don Caballero 3". I got complimented for it once at the local Guitar Center, ha.

I think the reason I go through so many sticks is because I smash the fuck out cymbals (I break a lot of those two). I do get a long time out of heads though. Also, using a circular saw blade as a bell on my ride cymbal probably does a lot of stick damage. Or maybe I'm super-tough!

i use vater fusion sticks. fusion ftw!! (yes i came out of the shadows for this) concerning cymbals and sticks... the more acute the angle is created when the shoulder of the stick comes in contact with the cymbal, the longer your stick should last.

I bought a 30" Sabian. Got a great deal on it, too. Full report when it arrives.

Yeah, as mentioned already I think most wear comes from hitting technique. I *slam* drums and break fewer sticks/cymbals/heads than less practiced friends. I use Promark 2B's and depending on the quality of the stick it lasts. If it's a dud stick it'll usually split in less than a half hour, but if it's good I can get a couple of weeks out of it; which is many hours.
Making your gear last is all common sense stuff. Don't hit your cymbals on the actual rim, and don't hit them at a 90 degree angle if you want cymbals to last more than a month. Don't tilt your drums so you're clipping and chipping up sticks on rims. The bigger and less pointy the tip of the stick, the better for your head life.
