...was kinda everything I hoped it wouldn't be.
I never got a chance to see Don Cab when they were together, so despite my trepidation I took a chance on the show last night. What I got was, among other things, Damon selling his old drumsticks and changing pants (so he can play better??) in view of the audience. I got them utterly fucking up "Fire Back" (not being able to do with two guitars what Ian Williams did with one), and worst of all I made sure I was extreme front and center, only to have this huge bassist blocking my view of the only thing anyone wanted to see, the drumkit. So I left after two songs as I still had time to catch Boston public transport. Harsh, but there were too many things about it that did not feel right. Thank god the Constantines were amazing.

It's a pity you left so soon - they really got into a groove after "Fire Back..." (which was fucked up - I don't think they should even bother using that in future sets).
I really enjoyed it actually. It was mighty weird for the first 20 mins until I got used to hearing the new guitar styles. I much preferred the moments that weren't so Ian Williams or Mike Banfield, if you know what I mean - the Creta Bourzia guys are very talented but they don't have the same spontaneity that Ian and Mike had.
However, they were quite tight and pulled off a mean instrumental math-rock show in the end - well worth seeing. Damon was his usual odd self, but in a good mood.
The signed drumstick thing was a little strange too. I didn't buy any - they are like tree trunks, and I think I would ruin my kit with 'em.
There's no doubt about it - it was bizarre seeing these guys play Don Cab songs, but I didn't really mind Jon Fine (Bitch Magnet) playing with them in '99, so it's just a matter of scale really :-)
As for what they played - lessee:
Puddin' in my eye Fire Back In absence of... Delivering the Groceries Afro Pop Second half of From the Desk of Elsewhere Go Belted Sweater ICEMAN Let's face it pal Our Caballero 3 new songs (one of which was an insane double-bass thing, almost death metal-like) I Never Liked You Stupid Puma Second half of Don Cab 3
I have pics of the show which I'm going to upload to Don Fanallero now.
Enjoy 'em if you get to see 'em!
Brian
p.s. To the dickhead to the right of me that grabbed Damon's stick as he was doing his usual dance during "I Never Liked You" - you are a fucking dickhead. God, that annoyed me.

Sorry to hear about your disappointing experience, BraudimusPrime.
Having seen Don Cab, Half Life and Bellini a number of times over the years, it might make you feel a little better if I tell you that I don't think I've ever seen Damon play without removing his pants first. I assume it's easier to play pantless when the sweating starts.
"Damon selling his old drumsticks..." Now that's a new one!
Glad to hear that the Constantines were great though. I'm not familiar with them.

The GeoCities bastards have such a petty, tiny download limit on my website that the Don Cab pics aren't available right now...try again later if you're having a problem getting them.

I'm excited to see them on Sunday at the Ottobar. It's cool they're playing such a variety of songs.

Was there anything on the other side of those "Stop the Snubbing" shirts? For $5 I probably should have bought one. On the back, the shirt says: END SNUBIS MAXIMUS NO, REALLY 00-01 These shirts pay for themselves because girls in bars like to ask about what the message means.

Well, what does it mean?
Also, how much do those shirts cost? I would pay someone to buy one for me if they weren't too much.
EDIT: Someone said 5 dollars? I'll send someone 10 bucks if they would buy one and mail it to me.

what's this dance Damon does?

The dance is this silly drumstick waving thing that Damon does during the guitar only buildup parts near the end of "I Never Liked You". He comes out from behind the kit, waves his sticks around and goes back and finished the song.
What annoyed me was the loud jock prick idiot wanker fucker that grabbed his stick during this and held it for so long that Damon had to bitch smack his hands to get him to let it go. Afterwards, the dick was very proud of himself, but he doesn't yet realize that he's a dick. Oh well. Maybe he'll meet Damon in a dark Pennsylvania alley some night and get his comeuppance.
Sorry for venting, that kind of childish shit is one of my ultra pet peeves.

in response to much of the whining i've seen on this forum about the new don cab, i have a couple of things to say:
1) I've never seen Don Cab live before but the current incarnation I saw at the middle east rocked, and that, to me, is all that matters. I find it hard to believe that anyone could find the constantines performance, replete with annoying, raspy vocals and general inconsistency, even close to Don Cab's.
2)To the people posting (on the reunion section) about Damon's reforming the band as a "lazy" way to make money: how much money do you really think he makes off of this band? Seriously, he's clearly one of the most talented musicians in rock and roll but I'm sure he doesn't pull in more than, in a really good year, $20K from all of his musical work. If it's easier for him to make money by billing his new project Don Cab, I say go for it. If any of the other members re-formed the band without Damon would you even consider going? Probably not. If calling it Don Cab will, by drawing more people to shows and making him more money, allow Damon to spend more time working on new music, I'm all for it. Stupid indie rock purists need to get off of their high horse unless they are willing to put up the money to support their favorite bands and musicians and prevent them from "selling out" or in any way tarnishing their indie credibility.

I don't think that it's 'indie purism' to ask that when a band is revived with ONE original member that the name does not come back as well. Don Cab was a lot more then Damon Che. I think that the name choice has less to do with making money and more along the lines of why he sells his drumsticks cough ego cough. But as a whiny indie snob what would I know.

BTW - I agree with your opinion of the Constantines. Pretty lacklustre and bland, and certainly the kind of thing that Pitchfork Media would love to love.

That drumstick thing is pretty ridiculous. I remember when I saw Bellini here in Houston, and a partially broken drumstick flew my way during the set, I didn't even bother picking it up. It sat there the whole show... and no one cared. Damon Che is just a guy. Like anyone. Sure he is an amazing drummer and probably my favourite (just like many here). But sometimes, you just have to take what these people say and do with a grain of salt. TEXT. But hey, if a drumstick makes ya' feel empowered. Cool.
