I caught the Constantines/Don Cab show at the Ottobar last night. I have to say first that I really like the Constantines - half the reason I went to the show. To each his own, but I wouldn't describe them as lackluster even if they're not your thing.
Anyway - Don Cab - I liked em, but I wouldn't say they were even close to any incarnation of the band I've seen before. Damon is definitely an amazing drummer and worth the price of admission alone. First problem - outside of Damon, no personality. The bass player looked like he was having fun, but the other guys looked like they were just trying to get through the songs. Second problem - I couldn't get past that these guys were essentially doing Damon Che karaoke - sure, they learned the songs, but they didn't sound quite right much of the time (maybe that's just my memory, though) and while it's impressive that they went back and learned all those songs, I'm not sure what the point was - math rock nostalgia? I would have been much more impressed with an all original set of their stuff, even if it was Don Cab-like. They've proven that they can play and write songs, why bother doing stuff that was done much better by other musicians?

Stop the Snubbing shirts are awesome, I have had mine for over a year that I got from an inside source, and people always wonder what snubbing is.

Hey there. I've tossed some photos up from the show at the Middle East. I'll reserve my comments for the larger show account that's coming. toomuchrock.com/shows/doncab2.html

I always liked the tradition that if a band broke up you didnt reform it later with 1 member and keep the same name. Thats like Sting playing Police songs...lame.
I would go see any band Damon Che was in to see him drum. It doesnt have to be called Don Cab...what I've read described here sounds like a Don Cab cover band with the luck of having the original drummer since you couldnt pull if off without him anywas.
I tried to see Bellini here in Boston when they were supposed to play, on account that Che would be playing. Turns out he was throwing tantrums and the show cancelled.
Anywas, my point is get a new name, write some new songs, start a new band, you can even use the ex-Don Cab string, just dont rippoff your old band mates and your past.

I saw Don Cash in Philly the other night and well... exactly what d robot said a few posts up...
Disappointing. A weird feeling. Couldn't get into it, although I came in with an open mind. It felt off and it felt wrong. I was like, yeah, Stupid Puma! And then the song got played and it felt kind of flat. That was the feeling I felt all night, every song. When I heard stuff from What Burns, one of my all-time favorite LPs, I kind of got offended at what was being done to some seriously great music. The guitarists seemed a bit behind the beat all the time, and you know, playing something someone else wrote is kind of dispiriting enough, but playing something so complicated must be a real chore. It sure sounded like one. To play Ian Williams' stuff, I would imagine, as a guitarist myself, you sort of have to BE Ian Williams and understand how his mind works. He's WAY out there. It's cool that they tried, and I'm sure they're nice guys and fans of the band, but it just isn't right. The bassist was pretty excellent, I must admit. Damon, as a result of the kind of lifeless guitars, sounded more one-dimensional than I ever heard him. And the place was filled with a good amount of jocks and rocker dudes, definitely a way different crowd than the last few Don Cab shows I saw back when the band was still real...
Anyway, best of luck to Damon but I'm not into the Don Cab thing anymore. Can't wait for Speaking Canaries to tour though.
