This website does a good job of explaining what a McGuffin is: c2.com/cgi/wiki?McGuffin"McGuffin (aka: MacGuffin or maguffin) is a term for a Plot Enabling Device, i.e. a device or plot element in a movie that is deliberately placed to catch the viewer's attention and/or drive the logic of the plot, but which actually serves no further purpose - it won't pop up again later, it won't explain the ending, it won't actually do anything except possibly distract you while you try to figure out its significance. More specifically, it is usually a mysterious package or superweapon or something that everyone in the story is chasing." Here are a few of the ideas I've heard: 1. It's just a McGuffin, don't worry about it. 2. The soul of Marsellus Wallace. The combination of the briefcase is 666 and since Ving Rhames wears a band aid on the base of his skull. I can't remember why the band aid has any significance, I think it has to do with folklore of some sort. 3. The diamonds from Reservoir Dogs

Those diamonds were recovered by the cops at the end of Reservoir Dogs. Watch the end of the movie. You'll hear yelling and gunshots after Pink leaves the warehouse. Pumpkin/Ringo: "Is that what I think it is?" Jules nods his head. P/R: "It's beautiful." Maybe it's the Grail.
