excuse my ignorance (as i have been told that this technique is quite easy), but how is that pretty sounding thing in the beginning of "The Peter Criss Jazz" produced?

I'm pretty sure it's just Ian's guitar effects, looped, sampled, munged, squigged, mimffed and flooshed.

ooh! so all i need is a loop/sample pedal, a mung pedal, a squigg pedal, and a mimff/floosh pedal!

I know he has used a Loop Junky pedal (lo z-vex or something like that). I'm not completely sure of the name.
I know it produces warbly sounds, and i think it even has octave capabilities. sounds neat huh.
Anyways... maybe that's it? I dunno. :-)

he often hammers-on with his left hand while using his right hand to swell the volume knob up as he hits the notes. it produces a unique kind of a backwards tape effect. i bet that's what he's doing there.

it's definately a sample...
a sample that has been treated w/ effects, or possibly spliced w/ others. you can hears all kinds of shit in there...
is the same thing played live... i mean exactly.
if so... he is recalling that sample

yeah, i thought it was a different song. it's a looped and layered sample that he sets up on the headrush before the song begins.

I do believe it's a music box, you can almost hear the motor if you listen closely.
Towards the end of the song, when it comes back in, albeit "tripped out" (crazy pitch bends, etc), it is most likely Ian playing around with his FX toys again...

I had the opportunity to watch this up close when the DC toured around the time of the release of American Don.
Around that time, Ian was using an Akai Headrush and Danelectro Daddy-O distortion. In case you weren't aware, the Headrush is a digital looping pedal.
Ian would play harmonics and would then trigger the loop pedal record immediately after the attack of the note. This pedal gives it a very distinguished sound on the recorded loop.
At this particular show, the show began by Ian cueing up this loop of harmonic notes and setting the guitar down while the loop played and walking offstage, the full band returning minutes later to rip our heads off.

Crazy. I always thought I was listening to a synth at the beginning. I guess he does the same thing at 7:33. None of the live stuff I have has the intro :/
At the 5:20 and 8:34 mark: The swells sound like he's messing with the volume knob to produce a similar effect except they're notes instead of harmonics.

Wow dude you just bumped a thread that was 8 years old.
That has to be a record on these forums at least, props to you!
I really didn't like this song when I first heard it back in the day, I came to realise how brilliant it really is not long after that..
