Hi all,
Unfortunately I missed the Battles show last night (due to sickness...bleeurrrruughh...). Did anyone else get to go? If so, wanna post a gig review?
I really wanted to see them last night - not just for the musical content, but also to ask Ian why their Pittsburgh show on Friday was cancelled without notice.
Later, Brian

I'll probably put a new track up every week or so, due to limited space. If someone else wants to host them, be my guest. If you want to send them to me, I can probably host them for a while. My site's got bandwidth to kill before the end of the month.

On one hand, I feel bad for obtaining them against the band's wishes. On the other hand, I'm glad I was able to get them before they got taken down.

Hmm. I think the band member needs to chill out. That's just stupid - he should be psyched people are curious about the band. How can sharing a couple live tracks from a band with no releases possibly hurt?

The Battles web site has those Japanese tour dates, and a NYC date up. I'm bitter that the Japanese get to enjoy seeing Battles live before we Pittsburghers do. Then again, I blame the Japanese for everything!

first, wow, japan? this is strange, my homey just got back from a month there and he said it sucked in terms of music and ESPECIALLY shows, or even innovative music. this touring shit is real fishy, its like everyone goes to japan because a 5 dollar show out here is like 30 or 40 there. and everyone in japan is so clueless and they work so much that they really dont care about the music and think nothing of spending 40 dollars just going out to have some beers at a bar. fishy.
secondly we see the old "file-sharing" debate and delemma even rearing its head even in this esoteric music forum.
while battles can have numerous reasons to ask you all not to trade "bootlegged" anything,(especially because i know a bit about copyright law) the thing i'm baffled by is people like ELLIOT up there. wow, elliot, if you're that hard up for some good new music then check out my post in the new bands section called "giving back". and if that doesnt work for you, then i really suggest you try making your own music with any nearby object. just imagine, you could be listening to and enjoying making NEW music all the time. wow, what a novel idea.

Maybe it's to a greater degree in Japan, but the same idea applies to American indie bands in Europe. They eat the shit up, and the bands make a killing. It's a shame that same amount of support can't come from home, but oh well. It sounds like you're insulting these guys for taking advantage of the fact that someone's willing to buy their music and see their shows. I think most musicians would jump at the chance to make money with their music so they wouldn't have to work a "day job" to support themselves. What's bad about that?

Yeah... totally. There's nothing wrong with playing overseas. Count me in.

no, i totally agree with both of you, i would do the same thing. what i meant about it being "fishy" is that someone is fronting (investing) in the band to send them to japan and elsewhere. someone is investing in a band that doesnt even have a record out yet and is also newly formed. its kind of like shooting fish in a barrell to send just about any band to japan. sure i'd go to japan, my only issue is that i'm bitter that it could just as well be me who could be sent there with the same amount of success. and to tell you the truth don caballero seem to be, even in the united states, a regional band. i could be wrong about this but i think most of their fan base eminates from the northeast US and probably music schools. in LA this style of music and even the notoriety of DOn cab is minimal if existant at all. hell, i only learned about them when i moved to boston for a time. don cab is kind of like a college rock standard at this point, and in LA no ones gives a flying fuck about this music. its rough here.

I'm half "fishy" Speaking as a resident of England, I know I'm always stoked when a band I like from overseas come to play. Usually this is because, on the whole, I know that they're not going to be doing the trip year in year out. Sure, I'll buy a t-shirt, some cd's or a poster, sometimes as a reminder but usually because it's a great chance, maybe the only chance I'll get to purchase some of those releases that are hard to find over here, and at a decent price. And in terms of Battles touring Japan; usually when an album is released doesn't it get a release in the Far East quite a bit later than over here in Europe or America, for example? So in one way I think it's great that the band are touring Japan real soon, even if I am a bit jealous too You just have to be appreciative of how lucky you are. As for the band being relatively new and unknown, I think there must be pockets of loyal fans of the bands previous outputs over there to warrant the trip. I mean John Stanier was in Helmet and is in Tomahawk who are/were pretty well known and I'm sure Don Cab had a couple of fans in Japan too. And I'll bet they're willing to take a chance on Battles.
