had to pick between battles on 11/13 four hours away and d(am)on caballero here in town on the 20th. battles won hands down, so now i'm wondering...what's their live show like? do they manage to play their densely layered songs note for note, do they leave a lot of stuff out, is any of it improvised? i haven't been this excited to go to a show in a LONG time, and every time i listen to EP C, anticipation increases.
anybody got any good stories from seeing battles?

When I listened to some early live recordings before any of the EP's came out, I was sure there was improvisation going on. I've only heard a few studio recorded songs and they were different, tighter. That's my guess but I'm sure someone could give you a more informed opinion.

They are really great live. I saw their second gig in Boston, and it was superb. Very dense layers, but I couldn't tell you how close it was to the recordings because they hadn't released anything at that time. They are playing again tomorrow night - anyone here going to the Middle East to see them? I might drop in....

funny about Battles playing the Shelter to a dozen people. I remember seeing Don Cab there about 5 years ago (?) when Jim Rose Circus played upstairs. Had to wait til JR was done... Point of jumping in: Battles are playing a date not on any site: Lansing. Macs Bar Monday the 15th. 10pm. 18 and up. my band and Euphone open.

saw battles last night at the magic stick in detroit. about 20 die-hard fans in attendance. they were amazing, probably the best band around right now. the audience was very appreciative and the band responded with an amazingly passionate set. i wish i had gas money to get to lansing tonight, let me know how it goes! anyone want to start a band?

i'll start a band with you if it basically consists of us sending sound files back and forth via internet.

well, it doesn't quite live up to the thrill of creating music sponteneously and simultaneously, but it's fun. however, both of my computers are now dead and until i replace them, im out of the file-sharing game. i'll get back to you.

2 things... first off, battles was absolutely incredible in bloomington. well worth the 7 hour round trip drive. they opened with SZ2, which i hadn't heard at that point, and i could tell things were about to get crazy. the only time they let up was for a shorter version of UW. second - FauxAss, if you're serious about online collaboration, i'd be interested. i have some songs posted at www.soundclick.com/esebeday that you can check out and let me know.

yikes! i'm not good enough to collaborate with you! my stuff is all very cheesy sounding. and a lot of it is poppy to boot. www.purevolume.com/brynrynldsthat'll give you the idea.

i wouldn't necessarily say it's cheesy. light hearted, maybe...or fun. i tried to do a pop-type song for my wife earlier this year (it's called "a work in progress"), and i just can't seem to do it. maybe i should try again sometime. anyway, thanks for checking out my sounds.
