yyyYYYYYEEEEEEEEESS! okay, so I downloaded it as well.. not the optimum quality but good enough for a sample jesus.. this stuff is awesome.. I wanna find somewhere to pre-order this NOW!!! this album is cool, its fun, its wierd.. they must have chosen Atlas as the single because its the LEAST like the EP's, cuz theres more of that sound in the rest of the album. The vocals are great, I was a little worried that would ruin things, but they slip in their nicely.

does Tij remind you of something? I can't quite place it.. but I'm thinking it might be adapted from one of the EP tracks The beat definately has a "Dance" feel to it...

I think people are downloading it from the various file-sharing networks. My friend found it on Sendspace via some message board and gave to me, although I get a lot of records early because of the magazine I work on.
I really like the new record. I think it's much more interesting than the new Don Cab stuff, if it's even worth comparing. I would really like to see the upcoming Battles/Knot Feeder/Poison Arrows show in Pittsburgh.

Can I get that program for a Mac? I use Acquisition and it's pretty useless. I will check tonight as I am at work right now.

I am no file sharing expert, unfortunately - Sendspace is just a place where people post large files. The link where I downloaded is gone. My friend finds stuff posted on message boards - that's about as much as I know. He also uses something called Oink, which is a members-only bittorrent site. Maybe some others can chime in on how they find free records months ahead of the release date?

Yep, Oink's has got it. I get a lot of advance copies of things there and at Indietorrents, too.
Scratch that, it's no longer up at Oink's since the upload was verified as a transcode. I now patiently await another upload, this time legitimate.
In the meantime, though, the single tracks Atlas & Race In are still there. Those sound pretty good.

Battles is definitely one of the most exciting bands out there today. This new record proves it. They sound incredible, and I must say, I haven't heard a better single from any band in many years

"Atlas" is the best thing Battles have ever done, hands down.
Can I make a confession?
Although Battles are almost definitely one of the top five live bands I've ever seen, their EPs never did all that much for me. The EPs were fine but, for me, didn't do enough to separate themselves from all the other post-rock nonsense (Tortoise, etc.) going on at the time. Beep, boop, blip, whatever. It's only when you saw them perform it live -- when you saw Ian do his funny dances again, and you saw Stainer REACH for that cymbal -- that the songs really mattered. (Mind you, I last saw Battles in '04, and apparently their live show has evolved quite a lot since then...)
Anyway, "Atlas" matters, even without the live show. The vocals (Tyondai's, I think?) totally work. To hell with "instrumental math rock". It reminds me of the Glitter Band and Cabaret Voltaire, without sounding at all like either.
It's "ATLAS", people!!!

heard atlas for the first time on sunday. sounds like like wizzard or someone, also like the beautiful people (is that what it's called?) by marylin manson. really not sure about it. can't imagine frugging my ass off to it with a few pints in me as much as i would listening to something like ipt2.

I'm not too sure whether i like the new album or the two ep's combined more, i think i have a bit of a leaning towards the ep's.
I'm not all that keen on ddiamondd and a couple of the other songs... tonto on the other hand is absolutely phenomenal. Tij and race in go very good too.
Battles are becoming pretty popular these days, i bet pitchfork as they have been will continue to shower appraisal on them and give it a really positive review when it's released. Even though we all know pitchfork are a bunch of petter arses.
