Fusion has never impressed me. I have this album and you can't fault the players, they are awesome. However, there is just something about it. I like Mclaughlin's work with Miles Davis, his playing and his sound on Bitches Brew is faultless, I reckon.

have you heard the track i speak of here?
the shakti stuff was different than his mahavishnu orchestra stuff. there is a lot of eastern/indian instrumentation, and more jam based i would say.

remind me to make a sendspace of Marco Minnemann-Mike Keneally-Bryan Beller, Live in Schwaz, Austria - August 3, 2007 in a few days. these guys make something sick that i guess is fusion but its sensible. marco minneman needs to be kept in a cage when he's not playing drums.

Maybe your problem with fusion is similar to mine. Well, my problem is with John Mclaughlin mostly. He (or they) will be playing this amazing melody, then it'll trail off into nowhere. It's the risk you take by having a peice of music with an improvisation as the body.

It's the risk you take by having a peice of music with an improvisation as the body. Actually I very much enjoy improvisation, idiomatic or otherwise. Rather the problem is when 2 styles which are merged come off sounding exactly that; someone pushing two things together. It appears that some artists throw genres together whilst others take parts and bring them together into a more cohesive whole. I don't mean to say that one is better than the other but I know what I generally prefer. Miles Davis 70's output is a good example of what I mean by attemping to create cohesive music using different styles.

that makes a lot of sense. it's unacceptable to trash an entire genre like that, regardless. if you dug a little deeper, you'd find that not all fusion is a pathetic attempt at jazz + rock (all though some is - i can't dispute that).

You're right. Here's some albums I like which have been tagged as fusion: James Blood Ulmer - Tales of Captain Black Ornette Coleman - Body Meta George Duke - Feel Miles Davis - On the Corner
