Anyone into this genre (subgenre of prog rock)? I'm fairly new to it, enjoying the hell out of all the pre-90s stuff by the band Ruins as well as the album Udu Wudu by Magma. I guess it's a silly concept (lyrics written in new languages devised by the musicians themselves) which to assign a new genre name, but it has obviously produced worthwhile music.

The way Zeuhl is banded around makes me think there's little need for their own genre name. I've seen bands like Happy Family, Guapo, Shub Niggurath named as Zeuhl music but none of those bands made their own language or Kobaïan. I'll just name some prog recommendations that lean in that direction:
Tipographica - God Says I Can't Dance Tipographica - Floating Opera Magma - Attahk Happy Family - S/T Happy Family - Toscco French TV - The Violence of Amateurs Dun - Eros Art Zoyd - Génération sans Futur Blast - A Sophisticated Face Samla Mammas Manna - Måltid 5uu's - Crisis in Clay

Thanks for the recommendations DC. I've been meaning to check out Samla Mammas Manna. What I've heard of Koenji Hyakkei is mindblowing... there's some rad youtube videos of them as well as of Ruins (mostly Ruins-Alone though).

I love Ruins, but I've never heard the genre term "zeuhl" before. I'd always classified Ruins as math/prog/noise rock.

Not specifically Zeuhl, but the early Guapo albums are worth a listen. Hirohito and Great Sage, Equal Of Heaven are good albums and think they also did a collaboration with Ruins a few years back.

pre-90s Ruins? you'ven't heard Hydero Just a couple of tracks. I know that Hydero's considered the best, but I'm trying to go in chronological order. Univers Zero pretty much rule...the ultimate in demented chamber rock. I've read that Shub-Niggurath are heavily influenced by Univers Zero but even darker sounding, so I'll prob check that band out next. (Who would've thought that France was a hotbed for great progressive music?) I know it's not exactly a representational release but I throughly enjoyed "Snorungarnas Symfoni" by Samla Mammas Manna. With that album in particular I'm starting to see how prog influenced early video game music.
