does anyone have any ideas of what to do with cracking cymbals? i've tried drilling a hole at the end of the crack but it never works. i cracked my ride cymbal a few days ago and it's not cracked at the edge or at the centre, but only a little crack about half way in, going parallel to the edge. any suggestions?

Hospitalcomedian, I've never had any luck drilling holes to stop cymbal cracks from spreading either, and the kind of internal crack that you're describing can be particularly insidious. This site has a few ideas: www.drumdojo.com/tech/cracked_cymbal.htmAs a rule, I never get rid of old cymbals, not even cracked ones. ESPECIALLY not cracked ones. I made a cymbal tree out of a horribly mangled B8 ride that I found in the garbage at my old band's practice space, a Rocktagon that looks like somebody took a bite out of it, and the remains of the cheapo brass cymbals that came with my first-ever drumkit. Neither Zach Hill nor the wizards at the cymbal factory could dream up a sound so trashy. That said, I wish I knew someone with a lathe who could take that Rocktagon and cut it down into a usable crash or hihat bottom!

It's fucked- if the crack is on the edge you can carve it out (see: damon) but anywhere else you won't be able to get much more out of it. I've tried drilling holes at each end of the crack but it just delayed the spread a little, and then sounded even worse once it continued to crack. I would let it be, play it for now and then eventually stack it ontop another broken cymbal when you replace it.

thanks for the suggestions. the drumdojo idea with epoxy might be worth trying except i don't know if i'd get a lot in, because it's a very small crack. it's probably my own fault. a few days after i bought it i noticed a little dark spot on it that turned out to be a little dent. really should have brought it back instead of playing it like a crash-ride for two years. the dent is right in the middle of the crack. i did bring an old crash out of retirement recently. broken up to a fucking shambles. sounds weak and pissy. perfect.
