Just got this from GeoCities:
"We're writing to let you know that Yahoo! GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009. On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files. Please be aware that after October 26, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable."
So...anyone got ideas on where to host the Don Fanallero site?
I'm willing to hand over ownership of the site too, as I rarely get time to add stuff to it these days. Let me know if you're willing to take it on and become the new owner.
Brian

Well, the way things are going this was bound to happen sooner or later. Blogspot offers what GeoCities did and then some. Blogspot is easier to get to grips with and more interactive than GeoCities.
Thinking more broadly however, it was bound to happen because of the rise of Google, who have monopolised the Internet. I remember a time when the internet was (or at least felt like) a lot more than google, blogspot, youtube and wikipedia. Now, there appears to be the internet owned by the big companies (mainstream) and then the rest of the internet, which struggles to attain any headroom against the big players.
Chime in if you feel otherwise.

Well, I'll take all the help I can get! All I need is suggestions on where to host things, and I'll move it over there. I'll take a look at blogspot for a start. Brian

You should be able to use this site right here, I think (proboards). Here's an example of what I mean, it's of course a message board, but has just straight-up web content both before and after the board: ozrics.proboards.com/That content was actually hosted on Geocities, previously, and it's all been moved over to the proboards site.

Thanks Rocco - but I've decided just to end my maintenance of the site.
I just posted this to the front page of the fan site:
Oct 10th 2009 - SITE CLOSING SOON!
It's been almost 10 years since I created this site, and now Yahoo! is closing Geocities entirely at the end of October. I've archived the content in case anyone wants a copy of it (about 10Mb zipped). Just drop me an email and I'll get it to you somehow. If a kindly soul wants to take over maintenance of the site, let me know and I'll happily hand you the reins. The forum will likely remain, so head on over there if you must have a Don Cab fix.
Thanks and love to everyone who contributed to the site over the years - sending me guitar tabs, tour dates, pictures, you name it. You are all awesome people.
Thanks mostly to Don Caballero for creating the only music to ever inspire me to create a fan site. I really should introduce myself to them at one of their future gigs.
Best, Brian

UPDATE! A buddy of mine from the Electrical Audio forum has agreed to host it! All is saved!! graneroperro.com/doncab/index.htmlUpdate your bookmarks...but keep in mind I won't be editing the site anymore. That's it for Don Fanallero - now it goes into permanent stasis! Brian

Brian, much respect and thanks to you for all of your efforts to provide the best Don Caballero fan site on the web. I'm glad that I could contribute over the years and check out other folks contributions as well. Just wanted to give you props for keeping it going as well as you could throughout the years. The torch has been past, so let it stand forever. Cheers, Brian!
