A style of music rarely mentioned on this board... but a genre that I find myself exploring more and more.
If you like Jazz... speak up. I would love to hear some recommendations!

not really a huge jazz fan, but interstellar space was a pretty great free-jazz album performed by john coltrane and rashied ali, one of coltrane's last. think "hella of the 60s". ;D

Yeah, John Coltrane's awesome. A Love Supreme and Ascension are great records of his. The live version of A Love Supreme is worth hearing too, just because he seemed to played the songs a bit faster and harder live. Kulu sé mama is another John Coltrane album I'd recommend, there's a good bit of percussion on that one.
Guitarist Nels Cline also recorded a real interesting version/revisiting of Coltrane's Interstellar Space too. Worth checking out.
Other recommendations I think would be anything by Eric Dolphy, early Bill Frisell who has a real interesting guitar style I think, and saxophonist John Zorn.

Cecil Taylor on the piano. From what i have heard of Unit Structures is pretty good. Just stick with Coltrane and Electric Miles period (even though that's not officially considered jazz) and you can't go wrong.

That's a pretty big fucking call dude... Have you listened to Bitches Brew? If you don't like that album then your ears aren't functioning properly. Everyone should check out A Love Supreme and Coltrane in general. Chet Baker, Art Blakey and Andrew Hill have some good stuff too. Mingus & Parker fuck for breakfast cause jazz is a slut again.

I spend alot of time listening to the contemporary/avantgarde jazz, mainly that of Chicago, meaning Isotope 217, Exploding Star Orchestra, Jeff Parker (solo) and Powerhouse Sound. You can hear all the albums of Isotope, Parker and Exploding... on thrilljockey.com, and if you have a dimeadozen.org account you can download a bootleg by Powerhouse Sound recorded by the same mastertaper (hammerhorror) who taped the recent Battles bootleg. There should still be an Isotope show in there as well I'm also, slowly, trying to get into the music of Chicago Underground Duo/Trio/Quartet/Orchestra as well as the music of the mad scientist Sun Ra

the thing about Miles Davis is that he was a great player, but his whole career path stemmed from him trying to remain famous and cutting edge. plus he was a fucking racist.

i worship John Coltrane. listening to him in chronological order is an amazing experience as you get to hear an artist pushing everything to a new level with each release. i recommend all of it...right from the start and his standard/ballads through to the total free jazz of interstellar space and sun ship. just amazing. and while it was his one big hit there is a live version of My Favorite Things from a Japanese concert which is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. oh and EVERYONE should sit through Ascension in its entirety at least once in their lives!
I'd also totally recommend anything be Albert Ayler. a very short career but utter astonishing none the less. total free jazz explosions. influenced Coltrane's later work.
and Pharaoh Sanders. got his start with Coltrane and his solo playing on Ascension leaves everybody else on that record behind. his own albums aren't as frantic as his work with Coltrane but still beautiful records.
also anything by Alice Coltrane, Rashid Ali, Jimmy Garrison, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus...i could go on and on.
i think the thing that puts alto of people off jazz is the schere vastness of it. there are so many records to choose and if ye don't know where to start it can be a nightmare! especially if ye just take a chance and end up with some straight/loungey jazz nonsense. that can put people off an entire genre. Jazz(good proper non Kenny G ass sucking shit! jazz) fucking rules!!
i am actually holding a night on Coltrane's birthday to hopefully blow some minds with his greatness. i get a bit carried away when it comes to the Father.
as Ayler said..."Coltrane was the father, Pharaoh the son & i am the Holy Ghost"

ok... so i made a cd to listen to on the way to work.
I'ts all Miles...
it's A Tribute to Jack Johnson (2 tracks) followed by Maiysha (off of Get Up With It).
I've been jamming this for a few days.
Might be the best jazz cd/music available, this mix cd
Bitches Brew would be a runner up
Thoughts...
