For some reason i have been checking out all of these "Greatest Albums of All Time" lists. Like the one from Rolling Stone magazine.
While there are alot of great great albums on there usually, there are just too many of the same bands. There's usually like 7 or 8 Beatles albums, a handful of Rolling Stones albums, and even multiple Eagles albums for christ sakes!!! There is even a few best of albums and for the love of god, I've seen a "Best of Girl Groups Vol. 1 and 2" (what a joke).
I mean, a ton of albums and artists deserve to be in there over stuff like... ... wait for it... ... wait for it... ... Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt!!! Believe it or not, Rolling Stone called this one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!!! So... Don Caballero doesn't make the cut, but No Doubt is all over the place?
I think maybe the people who make these lists just have a very limited taste or exposure to music, especially maybe the underground. So maybe I shouldn't treat them as an authority on this matter. It's just an insult though.
Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, but these lists stink! I'm considering making my own 100 Greatest Rock Albums of All Time list!

i've had a lot of conversations with people about this. it's pretty annoying. look at any list by Rolling Stone (or any thing like that) and it's all ways the same pool of bands. i guarantee that the same bands you see on the "50 Hardest Rocking Bands of All Time" list will be on the "25 Bands that Changed Music Forever" list, albeit in a different order. it's not some thing to get angry at, it should just further confirm for you the ineptitude of mainstream music review.

one of the music channels on the telly over here keeps showing all these "fifty worst songs of the eighties" and "worst number one's ever" style things. fucking ridiculous. having said all that, i've thinking of doing a list of fifty albums everyone should hear. not necessarily the fifty best ever, but stuff to get people into the kind of things i like without throwing them in at the deep end.

LOL... thanks Cliff, though my bday is actually a m/d/y later than the forum says.
"Greatest albums" lists are sometimes interesting to look at but mean nothing to me. I like what I like and that's it. It's encouraging to find alternative/indie lists with albums I like, but no single list of any kind is going to include Hella, Shonen Knife, and "A Love Supreme". And mainstream lists typically are biased towards the 60s/70s, men, vocals, and albums that made some kind of dent on the charts. Oh yeah, and the Eagles. Fuck the Eagles.

the eagles never really get a look in over here. nobody really cares, unless there's a guitar at a party; then it's hotel california time.

these lists are SO subjective that it's ridiculous to ever give any one such a title as "GREATEST __ EVER." suggested ammendment: "..ACCORDING TO ME (and perhaps a poll with a heavy bias in favor of a certain pool of contenders)." that would certainly make them a lot less offensive.
