In another thread a while back, someone asked for recommendations of Reich recordings. For the guitarists in the house, I would recommend Electric Guitar Phase. Its a reworking of Violin Phase, a composition from 1967. Incidentally, that's the first Reich piece I heard. Electric Guitar Phase can be found on: Steve Reich: Triple Quartet on Nonesuch Records. You can find a link to it on www.stevereich.com/Later, Mike

I first heard the track Nagoya Marimbas by Steve Reich, absolutely mind blowing stuff. Since i've bought that different trains cd. Good for chucking on late at night on headphones. I've always wanted to check out more stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

i think the first thing i heard by Reich was "music for 18 musicians." it's a beautiful piece of music. from what i've heard, "drumming" is also good. unfortunately, the 1 copy that the local library has is horribly scratched, so i didn't get to hear it the way it was intended. though i will say that the glitchy, skipping CD was pretty interesting too. almost sounded like nobukazu takemura remixed it...

if you love concepts, 4'33 is average at best, but all in all fine and dandy but if you love music- concept/sound usually organized, given voice, then 4'33 is mental masturbation the perfect time to be on your cell phone at a performance art, what a crock but you guys are talking about Reich. please excuse me.

i heard reich for the first time last night. it was an excerpt from dolly. it's on the dvd from the ohm+ boxset. the visuals and overdubbed speech were terrible, but the music itself was top quality stuff.

My favorite piece by far would have to be New York Counterpoint, followed by Music For 18 Musicians, then Electric Guitar Phase. So good.

the only steve reich i've heard is on the ohm boxset and i thought it was pretty good but not great. the most memorable thing about it was the piece he had on the dvd. the visuals were like something from a corporate video about "how your company can stop polluting and help agriculture". awful stuff. anyone else heard that boxset? the full name of it is ohm: the early gurus of electronic music 1948 to 1980 or something like that. either way, it says 1948 and the second song is from 1936 or 1937.
