"The Ungrateful Dead" sounds like second-rate Mars Volta with a busier drummer and lower recording budget. It's not bad, but it's NOT Hella.

It's not bad, but it's NOT Hella. no, its not. from all the press releases and everything, they're basically saying this is something new and that they are going to stick to it. i doubt they will be focusing so much on the old material anymore. also, second-rate mars volta? so there is actually a first-rate mars volta? har har...

also, according to ipecac, the ungrateful dead was one of the songs zach, spencer, josh, and carson wrote before the duet. so maybe the mars volta is second rate hella...?

I've got quite a few listens on this one and I am really digging it. I was a bit put off at first but it grew on me quick- much faster than the new Cab record for sure.
Also just picked up the 6 track acoustic record, just the duet- I had a 3 song acoustic ep that was good, but this is just... yeah

Well I downloaded the first half of the album and it's grown on me quite a bit. But I can't escape the feeling that one of the most important and original bands of the last 5 years has morphed into something less important and original. Not to mention that this extreme shift in sound and style is bound to alienate a significant number of old fans. But hey, I don't own the name Hella, so whatever.

"Hand That Rocks The Cradle", 1:42 -- that's a total Damon beat from one of the songs on American Don, with the cowbell on the upbeats.
What's up with the singer???

just thought i'd share. hella on new years eve: www.flickr.com/photos/grassrootsrecordco/What's up with the singer??? ha ha, good question... they're probably going to get a lot of flack for picking up a singer that sounds like les claypool/cedric zavala, but i think they'll benefit from it more anyways, as far as popularity goes...
