The Speaking Canaries played at The Brillobox in Pittsburgh on Saturday, February 11.
The new line-up consists of Damon Che, Gene Doyle on drums and a bassist whom I didn't recognize. I'm sure that we'll all know his name soon. Along with Gene Doyle's excellent drumming, his playing adds a nice dynamic to the new material. The bassist also sang a few songs, including "Houses and Houses of Perfectness" and a cover of Van Halen's "Panama."
As expected, Damon Che's performance was outstanding. It was great to hear and see him expand on the old songs and refine the new ones in person. The last track of their set was especially cool. My ears are still ringing.
All of the new material sounds great. Unfortunately, there was no mention of a release date for the next album.

I haven't been to that place yet, is it nice? If I had known of the show I would have checked it out. I Googled "Brillobox Pittsburgh" and saw a show date for Don Cab that supposedly occurred on Jan. 20. Did that happen?

The Brillobox is a cool place. There's a bar on the street-level and a performance space upstairs. I'll have to check out its website more often: www.myspace.com/brilloboxeventsI only found out about The Canaries show about 6 hours before they took the stage. According to my research, Brown Angel, Magic Wolf & Young Men's Department played at The Brillobox on Friday, January 20. Unless there was a last minute change, Don Caballero didn't perform. The last Don Cab show in Pittsburgh was at Mr. Smalls sometime last spring, right?

Yeah - I thought their last Pgh show was Mr. Small's too. The website I saw with the Jan. '06 date was www.theoremmusic.com/ If you look at the column on the left you see Don Cabellero (sic) w/ Brown Angel. I've added the Brillobox MySpace site to my "Favorites" so hopefully I won't miss the next show!
