I wasn't too excited about the new Bttls LP until I heard that Gary Numan guests on one of the songs. Should be interesting at least; amazing at best.
I know that Damon Che is a huge Numanoid. In fact, it was a conversation with Damon that prompted me to check out the early Numan albums, and I'm glad I did.

Numan also joined the Battles tour, virtually that is: his vocal track used + him singing on a double screen projection.

After reading this post I went and downloaded a leaked copy. This may not be kosher, and I really thought a lot before posting anything here about this, but I am finding it really hard not to share my enthusiasm. This album is, overall, fucking kick ass. I will absolutely be buying it at my first available opportunity. I can't stop listening to it, especially the last track 'Sundome' (which you can listen to here, btw: makebelievemelodies.wordpress.com/2011/04/14/listen-to-yamantaka-eyes-collaboration-with-battles-sundome/. I really hope they come to my town on the tour like they did for Mirrored. By the way, even though I'm happy to be able to listen to it, I can't imagine the band shares that, and that does not make me happy...actually it makes me very sad for them. Sure, it was going to made available on the Internet at some point, just like every piece of music that anyone would ever want to listen to, but for it to leak almost 2 months early has got to be a punch in the gut for the band members. So it's sort of a complicated mix of feelings I have, I guess. Either way, as I mentioned, the album is completely worth paying good money for, and I will be doing so very shortly after the official release date. If this post is going to cause some sort of issue, I can delete it, the mods (if there are any still) should just let me know, or feel free to nuke it themselves.

i agree about it being a punch in the gut, and ive been tryin to do what i can to discourage people from sharing it up or putting it all out there. two months is just way too early to leak out. i listened to it once to see what we're gonna be getting and i dug it, but i want to wait to hear it lossless, because i was pretty blown away and surprised. definately a great record.

I just don't understand uploaders. Even if they think they're providing a service of some kind, it's not their music so it's not up to them to give it away. As for downloading and then buying, I think this is perfectly acceptable. Illegal yes, but ethically sound in my opinion.

I received this in my Inbox last night and thought it was applicable to this discussion. This is from the Amon Tobin mailing list regarding his new album (huge fan of his):
ISAM available ahead of schedule - listen & download now!
Hello from Amon Tobin HQ!
On the one hand, we are VERY EXCITED to tell you that you can now listen to ISAM and get the download NOW. CLICK HERE AND GET IT
But wasn't ISAM supposed to be out in May? Why are there not nice photos of the new T-shirt, Limited Edition Art book and so on?
The frustration is real for us here at ATHQ and our partners at Ninja Tune say it best:
Try as we might to protect our artists' recordings until they're ready to be released, create exciting campaigns to expose the leftfield/ interesting/ worthwhile music that we believe in, to the widest audience and on some of the smallest budgets, and sell enough records to keep doing so; some people just don't get it. A nameless person who calls himself a journalist has decided that he, not us, is best placed to release the new Amon Tobin album, and to do so for free, online. We know these things happen, and we know that not everyone realises how much is invested in ambitious, groundbreaking tours, collaborations with brilliant artists and lovingly designed packaging... It still hurts. The man is not having it stuck to him. A faceless corporation is not being dealt a blow. All that happens is a lot of great ideas and music come under threat.
All of which is a long and frustrated way of saying that we're moving forward the digital release of Amon Tobin's masterpiece; 'ISAM'. We know that for the fans who've taken the time to unearth music made for reasons other than pure commerce, hearing an album is available without actually hearing it is a slap in the face. We'd like everyone who's invested that time and energy on the career of an artist like Amon Tobin to have the chance to own the album, in the form he and us intended, as soon as anyone else does. We're sure you'll see why we took so much care over it in the first place.
Jason for Amon Tobin HQ ---
So now, on amontobin.com, you can stream the entire new album in your browser for free, purchase a digital copy for $8 (which I think everyone can agree is a very reasonable price), or you can pre-order a physical copy in your choice of format (to be shipped out on the original release date of 5/23) and receive a digital/downloadable copy along with it.
I think Battles and Warp should consider doing this as well. Let's put it this way, as soon as I finish this post, I am off to purchase and download ISAM. If I could do the same with Gloss Drop, I would be.

It's a minefield, but the truth is that a lot of artists are taking things into their own hands and making sure their releases stay away from anyone who would think of leaking their material. You only need to look at the way some hip hop artists handle their business to see that it's possible to keep things sewn up.
