Punkgasm is a continuation of the direction that they took with World Class Listening Problem, but to me it is a much more experimental CD than anything previously recorded by them. Most of their CDs retained a "character" production-wise. Some might complain they sounded the same on every track (American Don for example I would classify as 'clean' and 'transparent' while '2' is more 'rough' and 'harsh' sounding, neither is a complaint and I do love this band a lot). Punkgasm though has a lot of variation on it, even while sounding very Don Cab-ish. There is also an amazing flow to the CD where short songs like "the irrespective dick area" and "why is the couch always wet?" serve as bridges between the longer songs. You will also notice vocals and even horns on this cd. They completely serve the songs well and add nice depth to the already complex sound they have forged. I would heartily recommend this to old Don Cab fans that are not afraid of a little variation and (in my opinion) evolution, and to fans of math-rock in general.

I was actually surprised to get it this early myself-I just pre-ordered it from relapse about 6 weeks ago and they shipped it out on Wednesday. The joys of pre-ordering I suppose.

I got my pre-order copy and t-shirt in the mail on Thursday, the 7th. It's been in the car since then, getting a lot of listening time. Anyway, I agree w/mhensh01's evaluation of the disc. It seems to be a pretty natural progression from WCLP. Al Sutton did a phenomenal job on the production side of things once again. I'm glad they've worked with him the last two discs. I like For Respect and American Don, but all the Sutton produced albums just sound more substantial to me. And I love that the drums are mixed from Damon's perspective.
I like most of the album so far, especially "Loudest Shop Vac in the World", "The Irrespective Dick Area", "Challenge Jets", "Bulk Eye" and "Lord Krepelka". Even though it was really weird at first to hear vocals in Don Cab songs, they're growing on me. Assuming that's Damon singing, I like his vocal approach (except on "Punkgasm") on these songs more than w/The Speaking Canaries.
I do, however, think that there is some filler on here. The title track is the weakest on the disc, and not a great way to close it out. If the album had ended with "Awe Man That's Jive Skip" it would've been just about perfect. Also, "Shit Kids Galore" seems unnecessary, but maybe I'm missing an inside joke or something...ironically, though, I keep getting that cheesy beat stuck in my head.
All in all, this is a good follow up to WCLP and I'm stoked my copy showed up almost 2 weeks before the release date. Props to Relapse for being on top of things. Several years ago I pre-ordered something from another label and had to call them when the release date came and went and the CD never showed, and then they didn't want to send me a copy.

wow... i'm not really sure what to say after listening to this for the first time. i'm kind of liking how they had more straightforward, upbeat rock tracks like "dirty looks", but... punkgasm. not sure about that one.

Initial thoughts upon first listen: This is the monstrosity everyone said World Class was.

My friend sent a RapidShare leak to me yesterday. I'm halfway through the album and I am thoroughly impressed and relieved. The vocals were very upsetting to hear at first, but I should grow accustomed to them soon. To me, "Punkgasm" is certainly one of the band's best.

I definitely like most of the new album at this early point. The title track, to me, sounds an awful lot like a Speaking Canaries song, with perhaps slightly fewer guitar heroics.

After a couple of listens I can definitely say I enjoy it. I like how it still feels like Don Cab but they've also experimented a good deal on this record too. "The Irrespective Dick Area" is insanely addictive . Surprisingly enough, I really dig the vocals on "Celestial Dusty Groove" and "Why is the Couch Always Wet?" The only song I'm not really feeling is "Punkgasm" but the song (and album) still has a lot of time to grow on me.
