well the thing with that is if i wanted to turn my friend onto "the magic don cab sound" that the reviewer is talking about i wouldn't recommend this album first.even though i do agree with some of the critics that review sucks.

Had a listen to the new album a few times, and I keep thinking of the Beatles White Album.. very fragmented.. a jumble of styles and ideas.. schizophrenic I guess is the best word. Definetely not a conventional album, as WCLP was more or less. And nobody seriously thinks Punkgasm or Shit Kids were written without tongue-in-cheek.. theyre friggin hilarious IMO.

**" I like For Respect and American Don, but all the Sutton produced albums just sound more substantial to me. "
I totally agree. Sutton is the man.
I happen to love this record. I'm glad they're evolving, it suits them. Every Don Cab record is a movement in a new direction, which I appreciate. I love the vocals, on Celestial Dusty Groove (very Speaking Canaries) and Why is the Couch Always Wet, although I don't know how they're going to pull that one off live. I can't wait to hear them this friday in Pontiac.
Some of the 3 over 4 guitar patterns and stuff are getting a little monotonous, but the music is great. A great band.

i like punkgasm slightly better than WCLP. American Don is their best in my opinion. i'm also gonna assume the title track is a joke. (i hope) Has anyone else noticed that the gatefold picture from punkgasm is kind of similar to the vinyl sleeve picture from Shellac's Terraform?

Better than WCLP but still, the music feels like an anachronism to me. Sad but true.

i don't see why Shit Kids Galore has to be ironic i actually consider it one of the best tracks on the album my favorite track is Why is the Couch Always Wet? i all so like Puppy Cat
there's some really strong material on this album but they keep mixing in these similar-sounding riffs that bore me to death Slaughbaugh's, Awe Man, Loudest Shop Vac, and Lord Krepelka, just to name a few, have sections i like a lot but contain a lot of filler riffs
all so, Damon's drumming doesn't sound very inspired any more, but i've had that complaint since American Don
i don't think Punkgasm (the song) is ironic either, nor is it too bad

More activity?
Here you go!
While there are some tracks on Punkgasm I have yet to get my head around (jive skippy) I feel the need to point out how I appreciate that this band has done something fundamentally different with EACH record. Who else can you say that about?
WCLP is one of the most cohesive and well arranged DC records, eschewing the "hinted at" melodic and rhythmic guitar style of WBNR.
WBNR is still the most creative and successful record I feel they've done, but I wouldn't ask them to repeat it. I think "Why is the couch always wet" is a fantastic addition to the DC lexicon. I love the song itself and I look forward to hearing what's next.
On a semi-related note, I would have like to hear another record with Jeff Ellsworth. WCLP sounds so amazingly full, and live, he was dynamite.

finally listening to punkgasm. definitely some good songs here, but there does seem to be filler. why is the couch always wet is a great song, as is puppy cat. the drumming does seem less don cabby than before, but it's not the only thing that's changed so maybe it's intentional. the singing on the title track reminds me of james murphy and the song itself has a bit of an lcd soundsystem feel to it. i'll have to hear it full through a few more times before i really make my mind up though.

the album speed is 45 rpm and when i first played it i just assumed the speed was at 33 rpm. i actually like the album a lot better slowed down, hahah.
