Drum geeking time yeah, ok. I was reading the Wikipedia entry on Damon and I saw that his main snare was described as a "custom snares" and an "auxiliary piccolo snare." Can anyone else back this up? Because I always thought Damon had just had a Ludwig Classic Maple snare, maybe in 6" or 6.5" depth. And the auxiliary snare was a vintage snare, maybe a Slingerland or a Ludwig? It looks a lot like a Radio King I have. Also, it says he uses "rock crashes." I'm pretty sure he at least uses a Sabian B8Pro Power Rock Ride, and he probably uses a B8Pro Medium Ride, but I was never sure about the one he uses on his left.
Any thoughts?

Don't trust the drumkit info on Wikipedia just yet. The only thing consistent about Damon's kit over the years have been the Pearl Export kick and toms (usually three, sometimes only two) and the Ludwig classic maple snare.
I don't know anything about the aux snare except that it's definitely shallower than the main snare.
Rototoms: He allegedly used as many as five Rototoms circa Don Cab 2, then NO Rototoms during the What Burns, American Don and Snowing Sun eras, then one during the 2003 and 2004 Don Cab tours. On the current tour he's got three Rototoms all attached to his hihat stand.
Cowbell: Introduced in 1997, retired in 2001 or 2002.
Cymbals: Usually large, inexpensive, cracked and warped Sabians, but Zildjians and Paistes have been spotted on occasion. Sabian B8 Pro hats used to be the norm but now he appears to play a pair of AAs.
Triangle: I swear to god I hear a triangle on some songs on What Burns Never Returns. Can anyone back me up on this? The accounts of Damon using a traingle as a guitar slide with Thee Speaking Canaries supports this.
Shitcheah, drum geeking.

There is definitely a triangle on Delivering the Groceries, but nothing else comes to mind. Did he really have only one cowbell? I didn't think you could get two pitches that far apart on one freakin' cowbell. Shows how much I know about drumming.
One other question. What kind of sticks does he use? I know he uses the butt end of the stick, which is just insane. He must have wicked strong wrists, or something. I couldn't stand using the butt ends of sticks for more than an hour or so without becoming completely drained. It does sound pretty freakin' sweet on the snare though, I just love the sound he gets out of his snare on American Don, so great.
I assume he uses Coated Ambassadors on everything too?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hears a triangle on "Groceries". I also hear it on "From The Desk of Elsewhere Go".
Yep, just one cowbell. He got two distinct pitches out of it by hitting it on the edge (low) and on the surface near the clamp (high).
Sticks: ProMark DC10 marching sticks. They're a little shorter than 2Bs or 5Bs but much heavier, and they don't even have proper tips or "beads". It's pretty remarkable, the finesse and subtlety he manages while playing with the butt ends of those tree trunks.
Heads: I think he actually uses Emperors, considering how hard he hits. Clear Pinstripes on the Rototoms. I hope this helps, Fvgazi!

Good god. That guy has the stamina of an ox. I always thought he uses Ambassadors because his bass drum can be pretty boomy, as with the toms. Its hard to tell, maybe he switches. They sound pretty similar.
Definitely helps, thanks.

At the end with all the guitar scratching/sliding he's going back between a triangle and his ride.

There are some new and really cool pics on Don Caballero's myspace page. There are shots of Damon's kit that might help!

I don't have myspace. Maybe you could do me a favor and post some links to them?

ooh drum jabber.. Cymbals: I've always found it hilarious how he insists on using the rattiest cymbals known to man.. that crash he was using on this tour looks like its been modified over a dozen times. And Sabian b8s.. probably the cheapest cymbals out there. But surprisingly they do sound pretty good in small spaces like clubs. Bass pedal: Any info on this? It seems like he added this to his setup between Cab 2 and What Burns.

Aw, damn! If that first photo had been taken a little ways back, you could see the logo on the heads. Balls. Well from those pictures it looks like those might be Emperors because they have a slightly darker tint than Ambassadors, but that could just be because his stuff is so god damn dirty. It also looks like has a steel snare of some sort, I think he has it in that picture of them playing live instead of the other one. And it looks like he has a coated Pinstripe (maybe a Powerstroke III) the bass drum now, which would explain why it gets so lost in the mix at times. Thanks for the linkage Cliff!

Drum geeking time indeed...
From seeing them play in a really small venue in london recently, I was standing right at the front, I managed to get a look at the badge on his toms, and it says Pearl M1 maple series export. So that clears that one up I guess although I've heard he used to use a Sonor kit with three rack toms in the early days. His main snare sounds pretty definately maple, and looked to be about 12, or 13 wide, by about 5, or 5.5 deep. I think the auxillary snare he was using is steel, and probably 14 wide, by about 4, or 5 deep. As for cymbals theres a thread on that in the general discussion board. But the sabian ones he uses, and used when I saw them, I'm pretty sure are; B8 Pro 14" rock hats, B8 Pro power rock ride (as his main ride), and B8 Pro 20" medium rock ride, and the B8 Pro 20" light rock ride as crashes. I also think he is still using the old DW double pedal that he used in the american don era. And he definately uses Pro mark double butted, 2B style sticks. Although I don't the exact name of the model he uses. He also used but 2 small roto toms attached to the hi-hat stand, that might have been just because the stage was so small though.
Interestingly though at the show I saw them at recently, the support bands drummer used Damons kit as well, and it really did sound pretty cheap and shitty when he played it. Damon then set it up at the front with out any mikes and he sounded as good as ever on it, I think it's partly that timbale type drum sticks sound better, and partly he just hits it so hard (He's a pretty big guy, especially now), especially the kick, and obviously being an amazing drummer is why he has such a great sound, on such a cheap drum kit. His main snare is awesome though. I'd really like to know what it is.
It did sadden me abit that he was completely wrecked after playing about 6 or 7 songs. he looked like he was about to collapse, and they had to finish prematurely. Guess he's pretty unfit these days although he does have a very physical style of drumming. The thing that impressed me most was his doble kick co-ordination, and technique.

His main snare is awesome though. I'd really like to know what it is. I'm pretty sure its a Ludwig Classic Maple snare. 14x5.5", probably. Its definitely a Ludwig, though. Thanks for the info.
